Este blog comenzó en su día como un intento de registrar las distintas etapas de un proyecto, esto es, un estudio de viabilidad de 6 meses para una pequeña agencia de traducción. Lo que pasa es que resultó que sí era posible, pero requería mucho más trabajo de lo que se esperaba en un principio. Por eso hemos contado tan pocas cosas aquí. Aquella idea es hoy una realidad, y tiene su propia sección de noticias en la página web de la empresa, Matiz
La autora
Hace unos años, embarazada de mi primera hija, y viendo que se puede tener un niño en nueve meses, nueve meses después de que naciera abriría mi propia empresa, pasar lo que pasara. Ya había co-fundado una junior empresa (que ganó un premio de la Universidad de Granada y JADE, la Confederación Europea de Junior Empresas), y desde entonces había querido fundar una empresa en el mundo real. Al final hizo falta un año, pero el día que mi hija cumplió un año, Matiz abrió sus puertas. Un año más tarde, tenía un premio nacional Bancaja Jóvenes Emprendedores, una de mis mejores amigas trabajando conmigo, una facturación que permitía pagar nuestros sueldos, y me sentía bastante optimista. Corría el año 2008.
Ah, 2009 en Murcia. Después de que explotara la burbuja, algunos de nuestros clientes dejaron de existir. Desde entonces he intentado, con un cierto grado de éxito, que Matiz funcione. Ahora tengo más formación, experiencia (léase: errores a las espaldas), una nueva socia, nuevos clientes, nuevos productos, nuevos sistemas, y este blog.
Ahora en tercera persona, a lo Tim Minchin… ;-)
Se llama Begoña Martínez y es traductora e intérprete desde 2003. Es licenciada por la Universidad de Granada en Traducción e Interpretación, especialidad interpretación de conferencias (por inglés). En su día cursó todo lo habido y por haber que estuviera (incluso remotamente) relacionado con la traducción audiovisual y literaria. Actualmente dirige Matiz.com.es, una pequeña agencia de traducción y tiene una vida propia (de vez en cuando) en la cual hay sitio para pareja, dos hijos y algunas aficiones. Algunas de estas aficiones, curiosamente, no tienen nada que ver con la traducción, como por ejemplo viajar, probar vinos nuevos, bailar tango, aprender a cantar, hacer fotos y dibujar algún garabato suelto. Además de anudar tallos de cerezas con la lengua, sabe escribir su propio código HTML desde cero.

The English version
This blog started as an attempt to record the different stages of a project, that is, a 6 month feasibility study for a small translation agency. The thing is, it looks like it was feasible, but much more work than initially expected. Thus, the lack of kiss and tell around here. That idea is now a reality, and it has its own news section at the company’s website:

A few years ago, I was pregnant with my first daughter and decided that, seeing that it took nine months to have a baby, nine months after her birth I would start my first company, no matter what. I had already co-founded an award-winning junior enterprise at college, and had wanted since then to start a company in the real world. It actually took a year, but the day my daughter turned one, I turned the key of my brand new translation company, Matiz. A year later, I had a national entrepreneurship award, one of my best friends working for me, a nice turnover that would pay both of our salaries, and was feeling mildly optimistic. It was 2008.
I live in a desirable area in Spain, Murcia. The housing bubble exploded, hard, and sadly many of our clients, well, disappeared. Since then, I’ve been trying, with a certain degree of success, to make Matiz work. Now I have more training, experience (read: mistakes made), a new business partner, new clients, new products, new systems, and this blog.
So [s]he writes in third person… ;-)
Begoña Martínez is a translator and interpreter. She even obtained a 4-year degree on the subject from the University of Granada. Her major was English conference interpreting, and she enrolled also (and passed with excellent grades, thank you very much) in any subject that had (even remotely) to do with audiovisual translation or literary translation.
At this point, she is behind the wheel of this small Spanish translation agency in Murcia, Spain. Sometimes she even has her own life, with a partner, a daughter, and hobbies that have nothing to do with her business, such as tango, singing (as in learning how to do it), photography, or drawing now and then.

Me encanta tu blog y me identifico contigo por muchas razones: “Emprendedora, traductora, intérprete, madre, activista… No, no sé cómo lo hago”.
Vivo en EE.UU. hace muchos años, pero soy de Benidorm (Alicante) y me siento mayormente andaluza porque toda mi familia lo es por ambos lados.
Soy traductora e intérprete (español inglés) desde 1991, sí empecé muy joven. He estado trabajando de manera independiente desde 2003.
